Welcome to One Year on Earth, the place where we (Derek and Shanna) will chronicle our year-long trip around the world, which begins on September 5th, 2007 — three days after our wedding. Our first stop is Paris, and then we’re headed to places a bit more off the beaten path.  (See Our Itinerary for more details.)
We hope to use this site — our first attempt at blogging — to share photos and videos from our travels, as well as (we hope!) to tell stories of great adventures along the way. We would also love to solicit from our readers suggestions for the places we’re visiting. (And if anyone has advice for two newlyweds spending their first year of marriage living out of backpacks, we’re all ears!)
Thanks for joining us on our travels!
My best to you and Shanna on your wedding day. This is the beginning of a life-long, winding and hilly journey filled with love, joy, pain and sadness. Love each other MORE through the difficult times. Make time for each other. Best wishes to both of you. Be safe on your travels.
I came to your blog through the Bootsnall travel blog… can’t wait to read of your adventures! Congratulations to you both.
I also found your site through BnA and I am so looking forward to being with you on your journey albeit from my computer. Be safe always on your travels and may your God be with you.
Derek,
Best wishes to you and Shanna on your wedding, your exciting first adventure together and your life-long journey. I hope to get the opportunity to meet Shanna–she sounds perfect for you and you for her.
I look forward to following your year long honeymoon and I hope that your journeys bring you back to Nashville as a home base. In any event, I will expect to see you on return visits or at future Duke events.
Good luck in your travels–be careful and safe and have fun.
Hi Derek and Shanna. I saw the article about your trip in the Tennessean. As a fellow Hillsboro Village resident and as someone who has already seen many of the places you’ll be going, I just wanted to wish you the best of luck. I hope you have a great time, learn about the world, and are touched by what you find. I know I have been.
Traveling the world is one of the most eye opening, humbling, and compassion-building things you can ever do. Good for both of you that you’ve decided to do this.
Derek and Shanna.
I am a member at East End United Methodist Church and was in church last Sunday to hear about your adventure. I am looking forward to following your travels through your blog. Blessings to you on your nuptials and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
I hope you will get the chance to come back to Nashville and share your adventure in person with our church. I really admire this gift you are giving the world. Best wishes to the both of you.
I was reading about your upcoming adventure in the Tennessean, while departing for home on Aug. 31st. My boys and I had flown in from Upstate NY for the preseason football game between the Titans and Green Bay. It was my son’s birthday gift and his first NFL game. You two will be starting the adventure of a life time as man and wife. You’ll have many firsts together and share in such incredible experiences. “good for you” you are truly showing us all how to enjoy a year on earth. May the gods smile on you whereever you are. I’ve added you to my favorites as to shadow your journey.
Derek & Shanna,
I Loved the article in the Tennesseean. Sounds like such a wonderful year. I will be watching as the year goes along on the website. Have a great time and be safe. Love, Gary, Wanda and Kelly
Derek and Shanna,
The wedding, actually the entire weekend, was outstanding, and you two will be boarding the plane for Paris in a few hours. I just wanted to take this opportunity to say Bon Voyage and Godspeed.
