After visiting 40 countries over a period of 366 days, we are leaving for the airport in a few minutes to board our final flight of the trip–one destined for Nashville, Tennessee. By the end of the day today, we’ll be home. It’s hard to even estimate the number of times we’ve thought about this day–about how it will feel to step off that plane onto U.S. soil, about what it will be like to hear English spoken everywhere we go, about how nice it will be to talk to our loved ones in person, rather than over email. Now that the day is actually here, it feels a bit surreal.
We already know that the experiences we’ve had over the past year are usually reserved for fairy-tales. The things we’ve seen, the people we’ve met and the challenges we’ve overcome are difficult for us to even comprehend. In fact, as we look back at some of the pictures over the past year, it’s hard for us to even believe that they ever really happened. The trip has gone far better than we could have ever imagined. We’ve been incredibly blessed and lucky–as well as safe–at every turn. While we are incredibly excited to get home, we are also overwhelmingly sad to be leaving our journey behind us. We know that it has been a defining moment of our lives.
It’s hard to come to grips with the fact that it will soon be part of our past. We will spend the next two weeks visiting friends and family in Nashville and Rochester, Michigan before driving to Washington, DC in mid-September to start our new lives. During that time, we will post several entries about our return home and our post-trip reflections on the past year, and we’ll make sure to share some of our favorite pictures, too. Stay tuned!
Congratulations. It’s been enjoyable to follow your travels from the start. An incredible experience that I’m sure (speaking from experience) will continue to impact you for years to come. Appreciated your interesting and well-written updates. Your travels have inspired a new list of must-see’s and must-do’s.
Welcome home.
Happy Anniversary! I just wanted to say that you for creating this website. It has been an absolute joy to follow your journey (one that I am afraid I would never have the nerve to take) and see the world. It’s been fun and exciting and I will be sad to see it end. Good luck back in the States! If you ever decide to change careers, I am sure that you two would give Rick Steves a run for his money ;-).
Welcome home!
Dearest Shanna and Derek, I just wanted to thank you not only for letting us tag along on your journey, but for leaving us with the “Stay-tuned”. If you think you are the only ones who have thought about this day many times, you are mistaken. My best friend, Amy, and I have immensely enjoyed following along with you daily and have discussed multiple times how we were going to handle losing you today, so thank you for not cutting us off at the knees! I know I speak for a multitude of people when I say that you have made us laugh, cry, dream and wish we were in your circle of friends that you are coming home to – we feel like you are old and dear friends. If you are ever in the Houston area, you have a place to stay and some good BBQ waiting for dinner. God Bless you in your adventures to come! Mindy Bachmann
Welcome back!
I’ve read every story and have enjoyed it more then you can imagine. I feel sad to think I won’t have it to read whenever I need a break from the office routine.
So…when does the book come out and have you sold the movie rights.
Love to you both,
Krissy’s Mom
Congratulations on finishing your journey! I found your site a few months ago and have enjoyed reading it a lot. I wish I had found it when you first started your trip. Good luck on your return!
I will miss following your adventure. I’m most impressed with the trip and your coverage on this site. I know I’ll keep coming back to it to reread your posts. We look forward to you visiting Bryan next week. Welcome Home!
I’m really going to miss checking in every few days to read up on your latest adventures. You’ve done a really wonderful job conveying the excitement and wonder of all that you’ve seen– it goes without saying that all of us readers are envious as all get out. I hope to see you while you’re in NashVegas.
Shanna & Derek,
I have greatly enjoyed following your travels and can’t believe it has already been a year. Thanks so much for sharing your adventures with us and allowing us to see the world through your eyes. May you be blessed as you begin the next part of your journey in DC.
Cheryl
Congrats on an amazing trip, a well written and intersting blog with great pictures (and very thorough) and starting your new life! I’ve been reading your blog since day 1, checking it every day (for a year!) eagerly looking for updates. It’s one of the first things I would check when I logged into my computer in the morning at the office. It’s been awesome to share in your trip and I now have so many more places I want to go to and see. I also love how you guys so meticulously documented what and where you ate and where you stayed (and diligengtly kept up with it for the whole year!). Valuable information indeed! I hope to hear more from you guys.
I will really miss reading about your adventures. No matter what annoyances my day brings about, I can always count on reading your blog to make them seem a little less important.
While I am sad that your journey is over, it is reassuring to know that you are only a short plane ride away.
Welcome Home!!
Great trip and great blog! It was well planned and executed and doubtless it has built a solid foundation. Happy anniversary! and wishing for countless more to come.
Love
Rico
I want to tell you that I have fully enjoyed your traveling over the last year. I read about your trip in the Tennessee last year and marked your web site. I have followed your trip everyday. You have taken me to places that I will never get to see. Good luck on starting your new jobs and a wonderful marriage.
Welcome Home
Shanna and Derek, hello!
I checked this i n c r e d i b l e website on the date you have arrived back home – September 5. That date I was again packing for another trip and the card you gave me at the Varanasi airport dropped from my bag. It brought all memories about my trip in India back! I am sure that you have 40 times more of colorful ones after your adventure. I cannot even imagine how you feel coming back! It took me a whole month to recover after just a month of vacation. I wish you that inspiration and breeze from each places that you have visited whisper happiness to your new life together. I am very happy that I had a chance to meet you, guys, and to share time during dinner in Delhi.
With warmest regards,
June
what a trip.
we met the two of you at the explora hotel in torres del paine national park. and what a long time ago that seems. the amazing thing about our trip to south america was the people that we met. and that includes the two of you. you have such integrity and solid vision of who you are and where you are going that i feel that your trip has only just begun.
good travels and see you down stream.
Best wishes!
I’ll echo what everyone else has said- I will miss the blog!
